Fitness ClubFitness? Health club. For most people, the first step to fitness is at the health club. But it can be a difficult first step to make – what club to join, what kind of membership to purchase, and other big decisions. Some chains, notably 24 Hour Fitness and Snap Fitness 24/7, but also smaller regional chains as well as independently operated fitness centers, are open around the clock. Obviously this is convenient for people with odd schedules. A possible drawback is that if a person chooses to work out at off-peak levels, there may not be as many trainers or employees at the center. It also costs more to keep a facility staffed and operating constantly, so dues at these centers may be higher than at gyms that keep more traditional hours. The YMCA and other community centers are also options. These are often nonprofit organizations, and sometimes the facilities and equipment reflect that. However, for someone who is relatively new to the world of fitness, health clubs, and gyms, the atmosphere may be more comfortable. If you’re looking for a more typical health club experience, there are still lots of choices left. There are women-only clubs, co-ed clubs, clubs that are close to spas, clubs that look like somebody’s basement. Of course there wouldn’t be this many choices if there weren’t takers for all these choices, but it’s important before signing a contract to make sure that the club is exactly what is wanted and needed.Contracts. Most clubs have a joining fee and a monthly fee. The monthly fee will usually be billed to a credit card or debited from a checking account, so it will be difficult to cancel for anything less than extraordinary circumstances. Most clubs offer incentives to join, such as waiving the joining fee or giving a free month at the end of the contract. It’s not too much to ask for some sort of promotion or concession when negotiating. When taking the first steps to fitness, health club or gym is usually what most people need. There are many different kinds of clubs and contracts, and it’s important to make sure you know exactly what you’re getting and that it’s exactly what you want and need. There are thousands of clubs and gyms, and if one doesn’t meet your needs, keep looking until you find one that does. If you are uncomfortable at the club, you won’t go, and if you don’t go, you won’t get fit.
